Paper Carrier rope is used in paper machine, coating machine, surface sizing machine, etc; within the papermaking industry, they are primarily used for conveying the paper web. They guide the paper web from the press section to the front dryer group. In the papermaking production process, old-style paper machines all rely on paper ropes to drive paper threading, while high-speed paper machines mostly use ropeless paper threading (Note: Ropeless paper threading does not completely eliminate the need for paper carrier rope. Paper threading from the front group dryer cylinder outlet to the sizing, then to the rear dryer cylinder inlet, and then to the calender and curling still requires carrier ropes to drive paper threading.). Although ropeless paper threading is convenient to operate, has high paper splicing efficiency and is safe, the ropeless paper threading production line is too long and the structure of each part is complex.


Troubleshooting and Maintenance of Paper Carrier Rope

Proper use of the carrier ropes directly affects the efficiency of paper guide. To effectively reduce failures, it helps to first understand the carrier rope installation positions and their main applications in the papermaking process. Sun Hong will summarize and analyze the typical problems and solutions that occur when using the paper carrier rope:

  • The carrier rope of the front group dryer cylinder is in normal production but wears out and breaks within a few days of use: This may be caused by the paper guide wheel diameter being too small. The small angle of the rope wheel during the return process is the main cause of wear. In addition, rope wheel deflection, wheel derailment, lack of oil and wear of the shaft, not being on the same side as the carrier rope, and unreasonable tension control can also cause the carrier rope to wear and break.

Solution: It is recommended to use a rope guide wheel with a diameter of 280mm, change the position of the inlet rope wheel, increase the rope angle, adjust the rope wheel level to be on the same plane as the carrier rope to avoid wear and wheel derailment, increase equipment maintenance, and adjust the appropriate paper guide wheel tension.


  • Paper splicing is difficult, and the paper web does not enter the next group of inlet angles: The cause of this should be the small inlet angle of each group, and the paper web is stuck on the doctor blade and wrinkled at the dryer cylinder outlet.

Solution: Adjust the rope pulley entrance angle to 40°-45° and install paper feeding blowing pipes at the tangent position of each group of outlet dryer cylinders.

  • The sizing machine takes a long time to splice paper, the paper web hangs on the sizing roller, doesn't enter the carrier rope nip, or breaks after entering: The sizing roller surface was wet and sticky to the paper. The carrier rope did not enter the paper drawing position when the paper was connected and the sizing roller was stuck. The speed adjustment of the sixth and seventh dryer cylinders was unreasonable, and the angle of the seventh dryer cylinder was unreasonable.

Solution: Change the carrier rope of the sizing machine from the original two inner and outer ropes to two bottom ropes and one top rope, so that the paper leaves the sixth dryer cylinder directly into the carrier rope nip; adjust the angle of the carrier rope of the seventh dryer so that the paper leaves the sixth dryer cylinder directly into the carrier rope entrance of the seventh dryer cylinder.


  • The carrier rope pulleys of the seven groups of dryer cylinders in the rear dryer process are easy to come off and difficult to install: This may be because there are too many dryer cylinders in the seven groups, the carrier rope pulleys are too compact, and the extension and retraction of the individual tensioners are not standard.

Solution: The seven dryer cylinder groups were equipped with a set of tensioning devices to increase the stretching and contraction of the carrier ropes by adjusting the position of the bottom return pulley and adding a set of tensioning devices to the inner and outer ropes, thus facilitating threading.


  • Broken ropes are difficult to clean and entangled with the dryer cylinder shaft: The dryer cylinder shaft is not equipped with a protective cover.

Solution: Install a dryer cylinder bearing protective cover. Dispose of short ropes promptly and cut each section with a knife to remove them separately.


Through the above measures and adjustments, regular maintenance of the carrier rope, correction of the rope pulley and regular replacement of the carrier rope during the production process greatly reduce the probability of failure, and continuous overall price improvement in production, thus achieving good use results.
